Monkey Shoulder
"AN OUTSTANDING WHISKY" - Whisky Magazine
William Grant and Sons know a thing or two about whisky (they've been doing it since 1887) but it's never too late to try something new. With Monkey Shoulder, their Malt Master, David Stewart, has created a genuine modern classic.
Using only single malt (no grain) Scotch whisky from their three Speyside distilleries, the Malt Master has developed a new style 'triple' malt.
Crafted in small batches of just 27 casks, Monkey Shoulder's smooth and rounded taste has accents of malty sweetness, vanilla, marmalade and barley sugar making it ideal for mixing in long drinks and cocktails, as well as simply over ice in 'Brass Monkey' form.
Jim Murray is a fan, awarding Monkey Shoulder a rating of 91% in his 2006 Whisky Bible, adding 'David Stewart clearly has the malts in the palm of his hands'. These qualities have already caught the attention of the country's leading bartenders, keen to base many new cocktails on Monkey Shoulder.
Rooted in malt whisky lore, Monkey Shoulder is inspired by and named in honour of William Grant and Sons' malt men, who are among the few still to turn the malting barley by hand using a shiel (wooden shovel). Monkey Shoulder was a nickname given to a temporary injury some malt men occasionally suffered many years ago as a result of their arduous and dedicated labour. Thankfully, working practices have now changed and the condition no longer exists. The name is inspired by, and in recognition of, their passion.
Launched in April 2005, Monkey Shoulder is available in selected bars and available to buy online (see www.monkeyshoulder.com)

Colour / Nose: Full (old) gold, sweet, flowery, light spice & soft leather. Becomes sweeter coconut to the fore. With water, there's chocolate, orange & more vanilla. Palate: Citric with a good balance between vanilla, spiciness & some soft, sultana-like fruits. Lovely melted chocolate on the finish. Score: 91 / 100
